Tuesday League Outing

On Friday 3rd September the Gents Tuesday League held their annual excursion and this year the popular links of Penrith was chosen as the venue.  With the Captain in attendance it was always going to be a short wearing day for the 39 trippers and under blue skies, Penrith Golf course was a picture.

On arrival at the course we were treated to bacon buns and coffee, the Captain admits to having an extra bacon bun, followed by 9 holes of golf in a pairs betterball 7/8 handicap format, off the tee’s of the day.  Soup and sandwiches were enjoyed at the lunch break followed by 18 holes of golf, teams of 4 with 2 scores to count and all scores counting on the par 3’s.  There was a carvery at the end of the day’s golf, the Captain admits to having seconds, with a choice of sweet to finish.

The Captain, on behalf of everyone on the outing, would like to thank David Hogan and Hugh Bennett for once again organising the day with aplomb with assistance given from Neil Boyd and Mark Turnough, well done gents a great day out for all.

Thanks are due to Penrith Golf Club, their greenstaff for the quality of the course, Bar and catering staff for providing an excellent service.  The Tuesday League will definitely be back to Penrith very soon.

Mr Colin Mahon, as Vice Captain, conducted the prize presentation.  This has become a traditional duty for the V.C. on the Tuesday League trip in recent years and is much enjoyed by all in attendance, well done Colin.

The overall results and the champion Tuesday League AM pair after a 6 hole count back were Brian Wilson and The Captain with a terrific score of 23 points.  The Captain and Brian held off a fierce challenge from 2nd placed Kevin Mahon and Rob Docherty, congratulations to Brian who was a great foil for the Captain and hard lines to Kevin and Rob but very well played.

In third place were David Hogan and Johnno Edwards with a fine score of 22 points and in fourth place Mike McLaughlin and John finch with 21 points, well played David, Johnno and Mike and John.

There were 2 holes in 2 made in the morning 9 hole competition by Jack Bennett and Martin Barrand both coming at the 162 yard par three 4th hole, well done Jack and Martin.

The afternoon 18 hole team of 4 competition produced a runaway champion team of David Hogan, Ged Wood, John Finch and Johnno Edwards who returned a score of 104 points, congratulations David, Ged, John and Johnno, achieving a staggering 9 point winning margin over 2nd placed Ray Haney, Stuart Moscrop, V.C. Colin Mahon and Gus Bennett who carded a 95 point haul (52 back 9) well done gents.

In 3rd place and also with a score of 95 points (49 back 9) were David Fenton, Colin Johnson, Allen Phizacklea and David Grainger and in 4th position with a score of 93 points were Tony Cassels, Brian Eastham, Kevin Mahon and Martin Barrand.  Well played gentlemen.

There were 8 holes in 2 made in the afternoon by The Captain, Russ Joel x 2, John Finch, Martin Holt, Kevin Mahon, Vice Captain Colin Mahon and Gus Bennett, good golf gents.

Nearest the pin prizes were given at the 4th and the 93 yard par three 10th which were won by Martin Holt and John Finch respectively.

Finally the Captain would like to thank everyone on the outing for representing Barrow Golf Club so well in both behaviour and dress and his playing partners on the day Allen Phizacklea, Brian Wilson, Mark Turnough and Colin Blackburn for their great company on and off the course.
